When Maya, from Springtree Road, was 16, her Irish grandmother taught her to cast on, knit, and purl. Although she has always loved to knit, it really took off for her in 2008 when she began making things for her daughter. Likewise, Maya has always enjoyed photography, and was deeply inspired to study the art when her daughter was born in 2005.
Her favorite subjects are old and abandoned buildings and houses and the common everyday things she sees around her – the things that make up a life. While she is in love with her Nikon dSLR, she has a special place in her heart for vintage or toy cameras and film. She is planning to play with some of those more often in the coming year.
Earlier in 2009, Maya decided that she had to learn to spin. The idea of taking something so simple as wool and turning it into a beautiful skein of yarn was too tantalizing to resist. She bought a second-hand wheel and 3 pounds of wool and set out to learn the mysteries of handspinning. One of the many things she loves about spinning is that there is so much to learn.
Springtree Road is the name of the street where Maya’s grandparents lived. She spent a lot of time there as a kid and 98% of her dreams take place or end up there, even today. To Maya, it represents love, security, happiness, and family. It was a natural name for her blog and Etsy Shop. For Maya, life is good.
